Katharina and Richard Benedek are happily married, though Richard’s work with the EU in Prague means they see little of each other. They have booked a holiday in Barcelona this year, but when Katharina comes to Prague her husband has vanished. Katharina has hardly ever ventured beyond her familiar, secure home, and she soon finds that the idyllic Czech capital also has a menacing, oppressive side to it.
Katharina discovers that Richard is no longer employed by the EU –and he is having an affair with the attractive call-girl Vera Frantova. What’s more, her husband has been working for the Russian Mafia. He tricked them in a deal involving counterfeit money, which is why he had to go into hiding. Then a skilled forger is killed, and Katharina starts to believe she is married to a murderer. At this point, while she is still dazed by such stunning revelations, Katharina meets the likeable Belgian Janic Bové, who tells her he is an old friend of her husband’s. Soon the body of a killer known to be associated with the Russian Mafia is found in a ruined skyscraper. And it emerges that Bové is actually an undercover cop trying to track Richard down.
Richard meets Katharina in secret, admits his involvement in the counterfeit racket but claims he is not a killer. He insists he has been doing all this to raise some money... for Katharina’s sake; her domineering mother has never accepted a son-in-law from a modest background. Katharina now decides she has to discover the whole truth. Which means she has to enter the lion’s den and confront Mafia boss Orlov in his night-club ...
