She was reputed to be both a martyr and a murderess, a Catholic saint and a sinner. She inspired poets and irritated men as hardly any other potentate had ever managed to do: Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. At 16, she married the French heir to the throne - later, she married her own cousin and then his murderer. She never gave up her fight for the English crown. Imprisoned for 19 years by her Protestant cousin and rival Elizabeth for reasons of power politics and personal jealousy, she was finally beheaded in 1587. Was this woman a victim or a perpetrator? Was she involved in the murder of her husbands, or was this suspicion merely part of the smear campaign by her enemies? Did she really want to depose the Queen of England? Could her gruesome death have been prevented? Even today, secrecy still surrounds Mary Stuart. Her fate, retold in this film at the original locations and using the results of new research, is a criminal act in history.
