Bruno Roggendorf is 12 years old, and he has just moved to a new house along with his father, the absent-minded Professor Peter Roggendorf, his sister Johanna and Granddad Gustav, who thinks of nothing but food. One day Bruno, who is crazy about technology, activates the quantum laser in his father's laboratory by mistake... and sets the whole adventure in motion. Now Bruno comes face to face with a Stone Age girl called Gna and her family, who must have been living behind the wall in the cellar for thousands of years.
Soon Bruno becomes best of friends with Gna, a lively character who can handle a slingshot even better than her brother Hulk can. But there's just one problem: nobody must find out about this incredible friendship. After all, how could her Stone Age family be made to understand things like magic markers, and how would the Roggendorfs react to a girl at Bruno's birthday party swinging a club around her head?
But some things in life are simply inevitable, and gradually the two families get wind of the secret: first Granddad Gustav, then Johanna and Tomek, and finally Gna's family as well. Granddad Gustav is delighted by the mountains of meat served up for every meal in the Stone Age, while the would-be musician Hulk finally finds a fan in the shape of Johanna.
The only person who knows nothing about what's going on is the inventor of the quantum laser, Professor Peter Roggendorf, who has no idea about the time window that opens inadvertently every now and then, when his back is turned. In fact, he has other worries - like the new housekeeper, Gosho, who keeps on gazing at him with eyelids fluttering, tries to remain as close to him as possible and ends up cleaning nothing in the house except his study. Peter is initially made to feel very uncomfortable by the constant attentions of this attractive women, but before long his feelings take on a completely new dimension. He has almost forgotten what it feels like, but soon he has to admit that he has fallen in love with Gosha.
Everything ought to be just great now: Peter is in love, the children approve of his choice - as does Gustav, who loves Gosha's cooking - Gna has survived the threat of a modern-day bout of flu, and her argument with Bruno is a thing of the past. But then Peter discovers the time window...
