For many women - and their men! - the best girlfriend is not only a very important subject in life but also one surrounded by extraordinary myths. The idea is that you stand by each other through thick and thin until, at the age of 80, the two of you spend your days on shady verandas reminiscing about events nobody else can recall. But what happens if this rose-tinted image is shattered by differences in careers and lifestyles, children and success, jealousy, envy and misunderstandings... in fact, by everyday life?
Martina and Eva are best of friends and almost complete opposites. Martina is sensible and reliable, capable and decisive, the single parent with a 16-year-old daughter who embraces every responsibility and takes care of everyone around her. Eva, on the other hand, is creative, moody, impetuous and passionate, changing her outfits and her opinions once a month and - naturally - waiting for the man of her dreams to turn up. As children they vowed to be friends forever, and each of them is there when the other needs her. But then Martina falls in love with Eva's neighbour, Stefan, and they are soon married. Eva feels abandoned... or she would if she were not having an affair with Stefan behind Martina's back.
The precarious situation can't last. The explosion that finally comes will shatter all their lives. How can their friendship survive? A suicide attempt, a long estrangement and a deadly illness are the landmarks on the road taken by these friends forever.
