A time bomb is ticking in Lake Kivu between Rwanda and the D. R. of Congo. In the course of thousands of years, a highly toxic mix of methane and carbon dioxide has formed at the bottom of the lake. With the increasing concentration of gas, the danger of an explosion looms. The result: all humans and animals around the lake would suffocate. To banish the danger, Rwanda plans to build a gas power plant. The gas would then no longer be the “Death from the Depths” but the “Treasure of Lake Kivu.”
