"A look back at the peaceful revolution in Eastern Europe.

The moving pictures of people whose cry for freedom and democracy brought the Wall down seem as if they were from the distant past. Still these events have changed Europe so much that a comprehensive look back to those dramatic days in the summer and fall of 1989 is only now able to tell the story behind the history. Overjoyed families who fled to freedom through Hungary - babies who were lifted over the fence at the embassy in Prague - mothers with their peace candles who defied the violence-ready power of the state - people, who wanted nothing more than their freedom, made history. Those who carried responsibility had to react and had to act.

Politicians from that time explain how, behind closed doors, they tried to ban the danger of violent clashes. The statements of Milhail Gorbachev, Eduard Shevardnadze, Gyula Horn, Helmut Kohl and others illuminate the background to Europe's peaceful revolution. Often unpublished fil shots, reports of statesmen, and moving memories of many unknown people who took their destinies in their own hands back then, provide a gripping picture of the path into the great freedom.
