Antonia, a midwife, and her husband Dr. Thomas Hellmann are on their honeymoon in Namibia when her former colleague, who heads a bush hospital there, dies in an accident. Thomas agrees to substitute for him at the hospital, and Antonia sets up a midwife school. It's a major challenge for both of them, who must reconcile Western and African medicine.
