In 1899, the German diplomat and scholar Max von Oppenheim made one of the greatest archaeological finds of the Near East: In Tel Halaf, near the Syrian desert, he discovered evidence of a civilization that flourished in the first millennium BC. The restoration of this find, which involved reassembling about 27,000 fragments, also reawakened interest in its discoverer.
