In the summer of 2002, archaeological divers discovered a rare find in the lagoon surrounding Venice: a 38-metre long galley - the first in the world to be found intact.
These galleys - the fastest and most technologically advanced vessels of their time - had helped Venice to become the superpower of Medieval Europe, defeating the pirates that preyed upon the Venetian trading ships.
This episode reveals the history of the galleys and the discovery and excavation of the shipwreck.
