The young physician Dr. Peter Berger (Timothy Peach) works at the private clinic owned by his father, Professor Axel Berger (Karl Michael Vogler), one of the most respected physicians in Berlin. The father suspiciously observes the attempts of his son to include experiences from the field of nature healing and "alternative" medicine in his treatment of patients. After a furious argument with his father, Peter leaves the clinic and takes over a country practice - which a friend of his mother has given up because of his age - in a rural area on the island of Rügen. Initially the beautiful nature, the sea, the picturesque scenery and the peculiar kind of people irritate and paralyze Peter. He finds it very hard to get along with the islanders and the practice only keeps above water with the help of old Ben, a crafty fisherman, and the experienced doctor's receptionist Petra (Yvonne Hornack).
His life changes dramatically when he meets an attractive woman by the name of Marlies Melcher (Maria Furtwängler), a divorced artist who lives in a romantic house by the sea together with her daughter. Marlies seeks Peter's professional help and Peter falls in love with her. To his horror he realizes after a number of physical examinations that Marlies is suffering from a life-threatening brain tumor.
A former patient in Berlin, a young prominent actress who was cured by Peter, has made Peter's successes public in the media, consequently he is inundated with patients who see him as a miracle healer.
Marlies also believes in Peter's healing power . He is her last hope after a university report urgently recommended a dangerous operation.
