Just like human beings, animals are born, they grow up, they get to know the world around them, mate, have children in their turn, grow old and finally die. Animals are direct, without artifice. They are playful and full of fun, cheeky or lazy, sometimes a little bit scary. Animals trigger emotions in children in a way that no toy can do, and have a major significance in their lives.

In this series Mona and Eric Zimen relate brief histories of the domestic animals on their farm. They show us the daily happenings over the course of a year: how the animals go out to pasture in spring and return to the stable in autumn, how they eat, sleep, resolve conflicts, how they give birth to their young and bring them up, and how the young in their turn inherit the earth.

In each of these films a particular animal occupies centre stage, accompanied by the farm dog Lili. Lili is constantly curious, and always sticking her nose in.
