These wildlife documentaries accomplish something quite exceptional. Volker Arzt,a well-known science Journalist and regular film-maker for ZDF's prime time wildlife slot "Naturzeit", poses questions which examine our fundamental relationship to the animal world. Few wildlife films before now have addressed the issues of culture and intelligence in the animal world or investigated animals' consciousness and range of emotions. Questions like these have only been touched upon in passing, perhaps because film-makers have not seen a way to portray these themes within the frame-work of a wildlife film, which traditionally relies heavily on stunning visual effects.

The extraordinary skill of this film-maker lies in his ability to take the apparently simple question "How would it be if animals could talk?" and make it the basis for a whole range of short narratives. The viewer is intrigued over and over again and motivated to look at the animals around him in an entirely new way.10 episodes aimed at a young audience make a subject of essentially scientific significance interesting and entertaining for children, encouraging a different attitude to the animals in the world around us.
